We're Still on Island Time

Seen on my morning run.

Happy Thanksgiving from Cambodia! We spent our Thursday on a snorkeling adventure. And if you read Wyatt's blog below, then you have a sense for how it went (well, kind of).

Once again, we started our day with a leisurely breakfast. But then one of the front desk staff approached us about 8:30am and said our driver was here -- the driver who would take us to the boat captain who would then take us snorkeling.

Ah, ok. Little misunderstanding there. We were supposed to go snorkeling the day before, but weather conditions weren't good. We thought we had left it with the hotel staff that we'd touch base on Thursday morning and see about going snorkeling in the afternoon. But the hotel staff must have thought we had booked snorkeling for Thursday morning. No problemo -- we quickly got ready, packed a bag, grabbed some towels, and headed for the truck that would take us to the other side of the island.

In the back of the truck, about to drive across the island.

Selfie time!

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at a concrete dock. The truck drove right up onto the dock and we saw a few boats tied up and some men milling around. We were ushered toward the boats, told to make our way across one boat (nothing like climbing over dock posts and boats in flip flops), and then to sit in the next boat over. It was clear that our boat captain and his assistant (first mate?) didn't speak much English. It was also true, as Wyatt wrote, that there were knives readily visible in our boat. There was one knife on the table in the middle of the boat; there was another knife on the bench. And there were most definitely three large buckets full of empty Cambodia Beer cans. Wyatt turned to me and said, "I don't want to go snorkeling anymore. Let's go back to our resort." The poor kid was terrified; he was definitely thinking the worst (hence his blog title: Murder on the High Seas).

That's a fake smile. You can't see the knives in this photo, but you sure can see all the beer cans.

Tim was able to calm Wyatt down, but he remained suspect all the way to the snorkeling spot, about 35 minutes away. Wyatt finally relaxed once he was in the water...and the knives remained on the boat.

Coming back to the boat!

Tim and Wyatt in the water.

Enjoying some fruit...which the captain cut with the knives on the boat. ;)

We could get used to this life...!

Snorkeling was fun; we saw some fish and coral reefs. After swimming a little while in the first spot, the boat captain took us to another spot in deeper water. Taylor and I stayed on the boat while Tim and Wyatt snorkeled some more. And then it was time to head back.

We pulled up to the concrete dock and yet again climbed over a boat to get to the truck. Nothing like a little obstacle course to add to the excitement.

Back at Long Set Resort, we ate lunch, jumped in the Gulf of Thailand, and then played games in the hotel pool. It was a pretty awesome afternoon, followed by card-playing, more swimming in the Gulf, and dinner on the beach. The kids also made friends with all the stray dogs...and there are a lot of them. They're super cute and we wish we could take them home (and/or give them flea medication).

The obligatory family beach photo.

It's a hairless, beat-up, so ugly it's soooo cute dog.

We want to bring this dog home!

That's Mak under Taylor's arm at dinner. This dog LOVED swimming in the water and running up and down the beach. We want to take him home, too!
